Statement From Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III on the Senate’s Confirmation of 425 General and Flag Officers
While this day is long overdue, I welcome the Senate’s confirmation of 425 of our highly qualified general and flag officers, who will at last be able to serve in critical positions to our national security.
These holds have already dragged on needlessly for months, degrading our military readiness and forcing far too many of our outstanding military families to put their lives on hold and endure even greater sacrifices. These unnecessary and unprecedented holds have forced multiple military services to operate without Senate-confirmed leaders and obligated some military leaders to take on two exceptionally demanding jobs at once.
We also look forward to the Senate’s confirmation of the remainder of our highly qualified and apolitical military leaders, so that America can have the fully fielded team it deserves during this critical moment for our national security.
White House Fellows Program 2024-25
Founded in 1964 by Lyndon B. Johnson, the White House Fellows program is one of America’s most prestigious programs for leadership and public service. White House Fellowships offer exceptional emerging leaders first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the Federal government. Selected individuals typically spend a year working as a full-time, paid Fellow to senior White House Staff, Cabinet Secretaries, and other top-ranking government officials. Fellows also participate in an education program consisting of roundtable discussions with leaders from the private and public sectors, and potential trips to study U.S. policy in action both domestically and internationally. Fellowships are awarded on a strictly non-partisan basis. The program has fostered a remarkable legacy of leadership. Of the more than 800 alumni in the last half-century, scores have gone on to top positions in the military, business, education, media, and philanthropy. Alumni currently serving in the Administration include Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, Assistant to the President and National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard, and U.S. Ambassador to Panama Mari Carmen Aponte. The fellowship runs from late August 2024 to late August 2025. Selection criteria include:
- A record of remarkable early-career professional achievement.
- Evidence of leadership skills and the potential for further growth.
- A demonstrated commitment to public service.
- The skills to succeed at the highest levels of the Federal Government and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
The application is available until January 5, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. ET. Eligibility: All applicants must be United States citizens, and must have completed their undergraduate education. The 2024 Military Health System (MHS) Conference is approaching fast!
In just a few short months, the 2024 MHS Conference will be held April 8 – April 12, 2024 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. The theme for 2024 MHS Conference is “The Future of Military Medicine – Integrated, Innovative, Ready.”
The 2024 MHS Conference will present a robust agenda for Department of Defense and MHS leadership communities, as well as our industry partners. This event will highlight current and future-state priorities, communicate lessons learned, and provide a forum for collaboration and unity of effort.

Registration for approved attendees is currently scheduled to open on December 20, 2023.
