MHS 2022 Federal Mil/Civ Nursing Leadership Excellence Award
This award honors Federal Civilian and Military Registered Nurses employed within the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency (DHA), Army, Navy, and Air Force who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and exceptional compassion and commitment to patients, colleagues, and the profession of nursing, resulting in noteworthy clinical or administrative accomplishments and contributing to the improved image and practice of nursing within the Military Health System (MHS).

Call for 2022 Henry C. Wu, James J. Leonard, & Llewellyn J. Legters Awards for Excellence in Research
The Henry C. Wu, James J. Leonard, and Llewellyn J. Legters Awards for Excellence in Research will be awarded annually to the USU Faculty members, in the estimation of their peers, have made the most significant contribution to the published literature during the previous three years (2019).
1. The Wu Award recognizes excellence in basic biomedical research.
2. The Leonard Award recognizes excellence in clinical research.
3. The Legters Award recognizes excellence in population health science research.
Award recipients will present an Award Lecture named in honor of Drs. Wu, Leonard, and Legters during a ResearchSymposium. Each awardee will also receive a memento and a cash award of $2,500.
Nomination Requirements
The nominee must have a current university faculty appointment at the level of Instructor or above, excluding adjunct appointments. Any Uniformed Services University (USU) faculty member, staff, or student, may submit nominations for the Awards. Self-nominations by USU faculty are permitted. Resubmission of previous nomination packages is encouraged provided that the three-year deadline has not expired. Previous holders of the award are not eligible within the first three full years of their last award.
The nomination package should include 3 items:
1) A copy of one (1) selected original research paper (Published after January 2019) upon which the nomination is based and meets the following criteria:
(a) Paper must have been published within the last three years
(b) Paper must have been published while the nominee performed as the faculty at USU with a minimum rank of Instructor or above and must be considered a member of the Faculty Assembly
(c) The nominee must be first or senior author on the paper, in addition to having the USU affiliation documented on the published paper
(d) The research reported is original and empirical.
2) A brief statement from the nominator outlining the significance of the published original research paper.
3) A copy of the nominee’s current curriculum vitae.
The closing date for nominations is August 10th, 2359hrs. The recipients of the Awards will

Nominations for the 2022 MHS Award for the Advancement of Women Physicians in Military Medicine

Background: Greetings MHS Leaders! This is the official call for nominations for the 2022 MHS Award for the Advancement of Women Physicians in Military Medicine (formerly Female Physician Leadership Award). Awards will be given to one Navy junior leader (O-3/O-4) and one Navy senior leader (O-5/O-6). Award criteria and instructions are provided in the attached document.
A complete package consists of a Nomination Form, Summary CV, and Command Endorsement/letter of recommendation. The committee requests that packages be submitted in one consolidated PDF format with the following standardized naming:
“Last Name First Initial_Service_Jr or Sr_AAWP_22”

The suspense for packages to be submitted is 31 July 2022. Packages must be vetted and scored prior to submission to the MHS committee, so late packages will not be considered.

2022 Military Health System Research Symposium – Annual Award Nominations
The 2022 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) annual awards recognize the accomplishments of individual researchers and research teams and Warfighter impact of those research and development efforts. Nominations will be accepted on-line until 29 April 2022.

USU Alumni Association Awards – Call for Nominations
The Uniformed Services University Alumni Association Awards Program recognizes six individuals annually for their contributions to both the military and to medicine. This year, awardees will be recognized on Saturday, 17 September 2022, at the USU Founders Day Gala, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Uniformed Services University. Awardees will receive a custom medallion and citation in recognition of their accomplishments.

CDR Matthew Humphreys, MC, USN Receives NCAA Award

Six former college athletes will receive the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in recognition of their collegiate and professional achievements.
The Silver Anniversary Award annually recognizes distinguished individuals on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of their college athletics careers. Representatives of NCAA member schools and conferences, along with a panel of former student-athletes, select each year’s recipients.
The 2022 recipients are Maiya Anderson, Tim Duncan, Warrick Dunn, Cmdr. Matthew Humphreys, Katie King Crowley and Tina Thompson. The NCAA will recognize the honorees at the Honors Celebration on Jan. 19 during the 2022 NCAA Convention in Indianapolis. The awards ceremony also will be streamed via the NCAA Twitter account. Below is a summary of their accomplishments.
CDR Matthew Humphreys
School: University of California, Santa Cruz
Major: Chemistry, with an emphasis in biochemistry
Sport: Swimming and diving
Cmdr. Matthew Humphreys was a 19-time College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America All-American and won the 1996 NCAA Division III national championship in the 200-yard individual medley. He is one of the most decorated swimmers in UC Santa Cruz program history and still holds school records in three events. After graduation, Humphreys was an emergency medical technician and beach lifeguard sergeant in Coronado, California, where he was named Lifeguard of the Year by his peers in 1999 and 2000. He made over 200 saves in his career and the Coronado City Council denoted May 6, 2003, as Matthew Humphreys Day. Humphreys joined the U.S. Navy and graduated from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences-Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2007 before completing his medical residency at UC San Diego. He is dual board certified in preventive medicine and occupational medicine and has received the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal and Navy Commendation Medal. During his service, Humphreys saved a submariner who was seriously injured in an accident and helped care for 41 refugees rescued from a capsized vessel. From 2009-10, he worked with Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 8 and helped select American Special Forces to reestablish the U.S. Embassy in Libya. In 2020, Humphreys was deployed onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt supporting COVID-19 relief efforts. He currently serves as the Navy’s public health emergency officer for the western U.S. and Pacific region.
