Government Sponsor, Health Outcomes Research Center of Excellence, NMC Portsmouth – O4-O6

NMCP is seeking candidates to assume the position of Government Sponsor for the Health Outcomes Research Centers of Excellence (HORCE). This is a is a collaborative healthcare research partnership between the United States Department of Defense Military Health System (DOD) and Health ResearchTx LLC (HRTX) that was established in 2010. The primary aims of the HORCE program are to:

  • Improve health outcomes
  • Advance patient safety
  • Increase force readiness
  • Lower healthcare costs

HORCE seeks to advance the goals of military medicine while also improving healthcare across the United States. To do this, HORCE leverages the power of the DOD to perform collaborative healthcare studies across a broad spectrum of therapeutic areas with the best medical minds from the DOD and civilian worlds. This also highlights DOD medical leadership to a broader audience in the civilian world and affords research opportunity via a public-private partnership, with a HRTX who provides funding for the program while DOD provides in-kind expertise and facility access. Over time, this model has delivered significant benefits to DOD at little or no cost.

The role of the Government Sponsor is to advise and facilitate adherence to DOD guidelines, ethics and good research practices. Additionally, the incumbent will serve as the government subject matter expert to recruit active duty medical officers and graduate medical education trainees to participate in novel research while proactively following DOD requirements.

The position is open to faculty at the 04 to 06 level, all Corps. Anticipated time commitment is equivalent to 0.05-0.1 FTE.  The preferred candidate will have the following attributes:

  1. Experience and familiarity in the conduct of clinical and outcomes research, government research protections, policy and appropriations.
  2. A track record of broad superior performance in both clinical and leadership positions.
  3. Significant interpersonal, communicative, and collaborative skills.
  4. Superior military bearing.
  5. Understanding of operational settings and understand operational imperatives.
  6. Be available to turnover in the MARCH-APRIL 2019.

The 126th Annual AMSUS meeting will be held in the Washington, D.C. area 28 November-1 December, 2017. Call for Reviewers

Do you have members who are looking for opportunities for a collateral duty/volunteerism, or to earn CME? The 2017, 126th Annual AMSUS Meeting extends this Call for Volunteer Reviewers to help select presentations for
the 2017 CE/CME sessions. The committee will include a variety of professionals across disciplines including physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, psychologists, pharmacists, dentists, dieticians, and medical administrators.

Each reviewer will be responsible for reading an assigned set of abstracts, completing an online score sheet and submitting recommendations. Approximately 8 hours of review and online reporting will be required. As an online review process, you will have access at your convenience. Reviewers will be acknowledged in the Continuing Education print material, and AMSUS web site as part of the organizing committee for the 2017 AMSUS Annual Meeting. A certificate of participation as a reviewer is available upon request. The review process will begin 5 June 2017 and be completed no later than 10 July. Conference attendance is not required to volunteer as a reviewer.

Background and Purpose

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Visiting Scholars Program is a one-year, part-time program that is intended to provide exposure to the fields of professional assessment and education, quality improvement (QI), and regulatory policy while promoting research and scholarship in areas related to Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC)/Continuing Certification (CC) that are important to the ABMS Member Boards Community.

Scholar Benefits

  • Scholars receive support from ABMS leadership to enhance their research projects related to Board Certification and MOC/CC
  • Scholars receive a unique education about current ABMS issues and initiatives through interactive monthly videoconferences and in-person meetings with health care and Member Board Community leaders
  • Scholars receive an introduction to the ABMS Member Boards Community through in-person participation in committee meetings, conferences and forums, and discussions with leadership
  • Scholars are linked to appropriate contacts within ABMS and the Member Boards Community who will assist with the spread and scale of the scholars’ research projects
  • Scholars will have ongoing engagement with the ABMS Member Boards Community through an alumni network

Who Should Apply?

The program is open to junior faculty including assistant professors and instructors, fellows, residents, medical students, public health students, graduate students and PhDs in health services research and other relevant disciplines who are working on or developing a research project related to Board Certification and MOC/CC.
