BLUF – A Defense Department Inspector General report found that Iranian drone and missile threats forced U.S. forces to relocate Army medical-evacuation helicopters during Operation Epic Fury, leaving most casualties to be evacuated by slower ground transportation while severe cases often depended on host-nation hospitals for advanced care. For Navy Medicine, the findings reinforce a central challenge of distributed maritime operations: future medical teams must be prepared for prolonged casualty care when air evacuation is intermittent or unavailable, while operating with constrained medical logistics and relying on alternative evacuation and coalition or host-nation treatment networks.
