State of the Blog at the Beginning of 2023

Posted on Updated on

Here is the annual blog post detailing the state of the blog as of the beginning of 2023.

Financial Report

Blog Profit = $135 loss!

As you probably realize, I pay for this and make no money from it, which is undoubtedly what has allowed me to keep doing this.

Blog Traffic

As of 12/33/22, we have just over 1,371,000 page views. Here is the blog traffic as measured by page views since I started it in 2015. See a pattern? In 2022, we topped out at over 319,000 views.

NMFDC Newsletter – November 2022

Posted on Updated on

ALCON,

On behalf of the Naval Medical Force Development Center (NMFDC), please see the attached November 2022 NMFDC Newsletter.

This month’s newsletter:

-Features the newly stood up Joint Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (JKSA) Working Group, which will advise, coordinate, and support joint efforts on medical personnel readiness.

-CAPT Heather Shattuck, Chief Nursing Officer, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, and Trauma Strategy Management Office (TSMO) Lead; and Mr. John Zarkowsky, Deputy Director of BUMED N5 and NMFDC Office of Primary Responsibility, will serve as the Navy Representatives to the JKSA Working Group.

-Showcases ongoing efforts by the NMFDC, TSMO, and the Expeditionary Resuscitative Surgical System Success Metrics Working Group to close existing Naval Medical Readiness Criteria data gaps and determine the optimal data, supported by “reps and sets”, to certify individual clinical proficiency by platform.

-Presents the NMFDC “Graphic of the Month” on the High Reliability Organization principle of “Deference to Expertise”.

-Spotlights the U.S. Fleet Forces article “The Press for Time during Medical Emergencies,” which gives a real-life example of how “reps and sets” can save lives.

-Wishes the U.S. Marine Corps a Happy 247th Birthday (established on 10 November 1775)!

Please feel free to share this newsletter with other relevant Navy Medicine stakeholders and those interested in the NMFDC’s efforts.

Very Respectfully,

The Naval Medical Force Development Center

Funded TAD to Teach Pre-Meds How to Suture

Posted on Updated on

We have an exciting recruitment opportunity to send approximately 45 physicians to teach premedical students about the basics of suturing.  Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) is requesting physician volunteers to attend the following four events around the country to work with between 100-300 students and teach them skills of suturing and speak to them about Navy Medicine.  You do not need to be an expert on suturing or the details of the Navy scholarships but should be competent to teach students various techniques of how to suture.  Basically, if you are not someone who does it regularly, please brush up on your skills before attending.

This is a FULLY FUNDED opportunity, meaning your command does NOT have to pay for it.  As long as you can get the time off, NRC will be paying for your travel and TAD.  Volunteers more local to the area will have priority to cut down on costs but anyone can volunteer.  Officers can volunteer for as many of these events as they would like, pending approval from their leadership to be away from the command.

The event dates/locations are as follows:

o   Midwest Region: Chicago, IL                                January 21, 2023

o   Southeast Region: Atlanta, GA                            February 4, 2023

o   Northeast Region: Philadelphia, PA                 February 11, 2023

o   Western Region: Los Angeles, CA                       February 18, 2023

Please disseminate this information to your communities as this is a unique opportunity for physicians to work with premed students around the country and speak about their experiences in Navy Medicine.  Volunteers should email CDR Jennifer Engkulawy (contact in the global) if they are interested and which dates/locations they would like to attend.  Thank you and have a wonderful rest of your day.
