These Navy ships have the most sailor burnout, study finds
BLUF – A study of nearly 16,000 sailors found widespread fatigue and stress across the surface fleet, with sailors averaging only 5.4 hours of sleep underway versus 7.7 hours needed to feel rested; littoral combat ships reported the highest burnout, while mine countermeasure ships had the highest job stress, and strategic napping was associated with lower stress and less impaired functioning. For Navy Medicine, the findings reinforce sleep and fatigue as operational health and safety issues and suggest that monitoring sleep patterns—including unusually frequent napping—could help identify sailors at risk for burnout, poor mental health and degraded performance before those problems compromise readiness.
