The New Signature Wounds: How Drone Warfare Is Reshaping the Injuries Veterans Bring Home
BLUF – The authors argue that drone warfare is creating a new generation of “signature wounds,” combining cumulative blast-related traumatic brain injury with distinctive psychological effects from persistent drone threats, while current military and VA systems remain poorly designed to document, diagnose and compensate injuries that may develop from repeated exposures rather than a single event. For Navy Medicine, the article highlights the need for better blast-exposure tracking, longitudinal brain-health screening and research, and earlier documentation of TBI and psychological symptoms as sailors and Marines increasingly operate in environments where drones threaten both frontline and traditionally protected rear areas.
