Long deployments overwhelm a strained Navy mental health system, personnel say
BLUF – Navy sailors and mental health professionals say prolonged combat deployments are overwhelming an at-sea mental health system already constrained by too few providers, weeks- or months-long appointment waits, heavy administrative burdens and treatment models poorly suited to rapidly addressing the needs of thousands of deployed sailors. For Navy Medicine, the accounts highlight an urgent need to reassess mental health staffing, access and care-delivery models for extended operations, particularly as some deployed clinicians report working up to 90 hours a week while sailors struggle to obtain timely treatment for depression, trauma and other serious conditions.
