The Next Step: Embed AI in the Military Health System
BLUF – A U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings article argues that the Military Health System should move beyond isolated AI pilots by establishing small, permanent clinical AI teams at military treatment facilities to deploy, validate and monitor tools that could accelerate diagnosis, reduce administrative burden and improve care from garrison clinics to austere environments. For Navy Medicine, the author proposes protected informatics and data-science billets, a DHA–Naval Postgraduate School clinical AI partnership and standardized AI governance, leveraging MHS GENESIS and military-specific clinical data to turn AI into a durable operational capability that improves readiness and supports prolonged and distributed care.
