Military medical experts address evolving fight against battlefield infections

BLUF – Military medical experts at the 2026 Military Health System Research Symposium emphasized that multidrug-resistant battlefield infections are an increasingly significant threat in future conflicts, highlighting research on rapid diagnostics, improved infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and international collaboration—drawing on lessons from Ukraine—to better protect wounded service members. For Navy Medicine, the discussion reinforces the importance of preparing expeditionary medical teams to rapidly identify and manage complex combat-related infections, ensuring effective trauma care and preserving force readiness in prolonged and contested operational environments.
