SUBJ/Department of the Navy 2024 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer,
and Intersex Pride Month Memorandum//

1. The Department of the Navy (DON) joins the Nation in celebrating Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Pride Month during
the month of June. LGBTQI+ Pride Month provides us with a platform to honor
the perseverance and achievements of LGBTQI+ leaders within our ranks and
reflect on the strides made in overcoming numerous obstacles to their
Service.

2. Pride Month serves as a reminder of the importance of creating a more
effective and supportive military community for everyone.
Everyday, the DON is proud to foster an environment where our Sailors,
Marines, and civilians can serve our Nation truthfully and openly, where
everyone's contributions are valued.

3. Throughout history, the LGBTQI+ community has patriotically served in all
parts of the DON. Their commitment to ensuring the safety of our seas have
endured despite the adversity posed by the former "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
policy, which was repealed on September 20, 2011. In the last year, the
Deputy Secretary of Defense began efforts to review the personnel records of
Service Members discharged during "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" because of their
sexual orientation. Records will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and
granted relief, as appropriate.

4. Today, as we confront the complexities of modern naval challenges, we are
deeply grateful for the honor, courage, and commitment of LGBTQI+ Sailors,
Marines, civilians, and their allies.
Their diverse perspectives, dedication, and distinguished service propel us
forward in fulfilling our mission with a force reflective of our Nation's
talents and strengths.

5. I encourage you to explore the rich cultural heritage and contributions
of the LGBTQI+ community to our Nation. You can learn more at
