Advancing Blood Production and Distribution: Leveraging AI in the Expeditionary Care Environment
BLUF – A Joint Force Quarterly article examines how artificial intelligence could improve military blood production and distribution through predictive demand forecasting, optimized transportation routes, real-time inventory tracking and targeted donor recruitment, particularly for low-titer type O whole blood, which has a 35-day shelf life. For Navy Medicine, integrating AI with blood logistics, unmanned delivery systems and inventory management could reduce shortages and waste while improving access to lifesaving transfusions during distributed maritime operations and large-scale combat, although human oversight remains essential in contested environments.
