Hegseth halts tenure appointments for civilian faculty at military academies

Posted on Updated on

BLUF – Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered military service academies to stop granting tenure to civilian faculty, arguing that the change will increase institutional flexibility and refocus education on preparing officers for war, although existing tenured professors are not explicitly affected. At the Naval Academy, where civilian professors constitute roughly half the faculty, the directive raises questions about recruiting and retaining experienced educators; its implications for Navy Medicine is probably limited to those officers who attend a service academy.
