Opinion on 9 Month Deployments – Just Because You Do it a Lot, Doesn’t Mean It’s Normal

Posted on Updated on

BLUF – Retired Navy Capt. John Cordle argues that nine-month deployments may become increasingly common but should not simply be accepted as “normal,” proposing concrete changes such as more deployment resiliency counselors and behavioral health technicians, restored operational stress-control programs, better gyms and fitness support, sleep and fatigue monitoring, expanded suicide-prevention programs, and longer post-deployment leave. John Cordle For Navy Medicine, his recommendations highlight an opportunity to redesign behavioral health, preventive medicine, sleep and fatigue management, and resilience support around the realities of prolonged deployments rather than expecting sailors and families to absorb the added health burden without additional resources.
