    Dear Captain Schofer,

Thank you for posting this article which I read a couple of days ago.

Given the dismissal of several high-ranking minority and female officers over the last 18 months, it seems reasonable and appropriate to scrutinize future promotion lists for evidence of bias against specific groups.

However, I was deeply struck by the tone of the comments on the article. Several responses were demeaning and sexist, including statements such as:

    – “Women belong in the kitchen.”

    – “This is a strong sign that merit has been placed first and foremost.”

    – “Common sense prevails.”

    – “As a former soldier, women are unsuited to command or to military service in general.”

    – “Women shouldn’t be in anything but support roles in the military.”

    – “Women should be in the kitchen, laundry room and bedroom anyway.”

    – “No more DEI ladies, time to start pulling your weight.”

If these comments were indeed posted by service members rather than external bots, it is a troubling indication of how inhospitable the military environment is becoming for women and minorities.
