SUBJ/DEPARTMENT OF NAVY 2022 WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH//

RMKS/1. Each March, the Department of the Navy (DON) celebrates Women's
History Month to reflect on the historical, cultural, and societal
contributions of women to our communities and to our Nation. It is an
opportunity to honor female Sailors, Marines, and civilians who paved the way
for future generations of leaders and to recognize those who continue to
serve with honor and distinction.

2. We pay tribute to trailblazers like Loretta Walsh and Opha May Johnson,
the first females to enlist in the Navy and the Marine Corps over a century
ago. We celebrate innovative leaders, such as scientist Rear Admiral Grace
Hopper, who was instrumental in the development of a computer programming
language that is still used in government and business applications today.
Their pioneering spirit shattered barriers and opened doors for many future
leaders. These include Admiral Michelle Howard, the first Navy four -star
admiral, Brigadier General Margaret Brewer, the first female general in
Marine Corps history, and Steffanie Easter, the first civilian and woman to
serve as the Director, Navy Staff Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

3. The DON is committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive environment
where women continue to serve at all levels of leadership. Currently, the
DON's total force is comprised of more than 187,000 women serving in career
fields such as combat arms, surface, subsurface, and aviation as well as
engineering, technology, and mathematics. Women represent thirty percent of
the DON's civilian leadership corps, including Senior Executive Service,
Highly Qualified Experts, Scientific, and Senior Level positions.

4. The contributions of women have been integral to improving and sustaining
mission readiness. Diverse teams offer varied perspectives and optimized
solutions to today's challenges. As we celebrate this month, I encourage you
to learn more about the contributions of all women to the DON total force and
salute those that continue to shape the future.

5. Released by the Honorable Carlos Del Toro Secretary of the Navy.//
